When cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton saw a passage from Akerman’s film D’Est (1993) while Rachmaninoff’s cello sonata was playing in the background, she immediately knew that this footage and music have something to tell each other. Together with Akerman, she created a haunting cinematic concert in which D’Est resonates poetically with music by Schnittke, Martinů, Chopin and other composers from Russia and Eastern Europe. Accompanied by pianist Sarah Rothenberg, Wieder-Atherton revives this concert playing on the images of D’Est, coming up next at Bozar for the opening of its exhibition Chantal Akerman: Travelling.

« Ce sont les extraordinaires images du film d’Est de Chantal Akerman, restées gravées en moi, qui m’ont donné l’envie de ce projet. Quand j’ai regardé un extrait du film, sans son, pendant que la sonate de Rachmaninov et Schnittke plus tard résonnaient à pleine voix, j’ai vu la musique, cette musique, transformer les voitures roulant dans la neige en ballerines légères, suivre d’un regard de parent des enfants jouant à la luge ; je l’ai vue protéger des femmes ramassant des pommes de terre dans un champs mais aussi rendre menaçant un bâtiment caché derrière des arbres, de nuit. Mais sans jamais expliquer ni commenter. Les mouvements s’entremêlent ; l’image, la musique s’écoutent, se regardent, se croisent… » Sonia Wieder-Atherton
« Première image, première émotion. Un écran de tulle blanc tombe d’un coup d’un seul devant Sonia Wieder-Atherton. Le bal commence dans un grand hôtel de Moscou. Ils jouent l’Adagio de Prokofiev. Je me suis dit, troublée, ça marche. Sonia me parlait depuis longtemps de ce projet et je ne comprenais qu’à moitié. Mais à ce moment-là, tout est devenu évident pour moi. Les deux petites silhouettes des musiciens se mariaient avec celles qui dansaient à l’avant plan comme si jamais avant le film n’avait existé sans elles. Comme si le film, les danseurs, l’hôtel tout attendait qu’advienne Prokofiev qui semblait arriver des profondeurs même de leur imaginaire. C’était saisissant. J’ai eu dès lors envie de continuer l’aventure avec eux. Je n’aurais surtout pas voulu m’en priver. » Chantal Akerman
